Kirkland artist Peter Knox, who spent time in Europe cultivating his unique style of oversize, contemporary oil and acrylic painting, will debut his new series “Art in Translation” at Ryan James Gallery in north Kirkland with an opening reception from 5:30–10 p.m. on May 14.

“I’m excited to be back in Kirkland, where I paint in my Bridle Trails barn, converted to an art studio,” Knox said. “My inspiration comes from color and texture I see in my own life, whether it’s interesting food combinations on a plate, or the laughter of children. People who see this series might find a few hidden faces if they look closely, I love painting in layers and the mystery and little surprises that creates.”

Knox, who was originally trained as a chef, draws on years of experience with texture, color and presentation in fine dining restaurants, translating that into artistic expression. He favors the use of vibrant color and texture in his work. This oversize series of oil and acrylic on paper and canvas was created in 2014-2015 with a fresh and lively approach.

Knox is a 20-year resident of Kirkland’s Bridle Trails neighborhood. He spent 2009-2012 in Paris, working with artists from all over Europe, at Atelier 100.
