Fireworks back on for Kirkland’s July Fourth; more funds still needed

The brilliant Fourth of July fireworks show that has lit up Moss Bay for the past nine years is back on.

The brilliant Fourth of July fireworks show that has lit up Moss Bay for the past nine years is back on.

Thanks in part to several large donations, Fourth of July organizers Celebrate Kirkland has raised nearly $15,000.

“We’re getting there,” said Penny Sweet, Celebrate Kirkland director and local business owner, who teamed up with Susan Burnash of Purple Duck Marketing to raise enough money to fully fund and equip the tug-boat, barge, staff and fireworks to continue the festivities this year.

Sweet said the $15,000 lost in grant funding following city budget cuts last year is almost replaced, however “we still need to earn another $5,000-$7,000 to light up the sky.”

Donors who have contributed large donations include Overlake Oil-Pacific Pride that donated $5,000; Kirkland Parkplace and Evergreen Healthcare that both donated $3,000; The Heathman Hotel, $2,500 and Ford of Kirkland, $1,000.

Fourth of July festivities in Kirkland have brought together tens of thousands of people in past years, Sweet said, adding the celebration is the only full community event the City has.

“Bottom line is, we will have fireworks,” she wrote in a blog post on Kirkland Views in response to a post by blog owner Rob Butcher. “How much and how long is still up to us.”
