Battlefield Band to perform at KPC Oct. 29

The Battlefield Band will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the Kirkland Performance Center, 350 Kirkland Avenue.

The band has proven to be one of the longest-running institutions of Scottish music. At their inception in 1969, they quickly made their mark as one of the most adventurous young groups around, mixing traditional music with some rock and pop. And at one time or another over those four decades, many of Scotland’s best known traditional musicians have been in the band.

Mixing the old songs and tunes with new self-penned material, “the Batties” (as they’re known to fans) play them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments: bagpipes, synthesizers, fiddles, guitars, whistles, bouzouki, flutes, accordion, and more. The band’s current lineup

features Alan Reid on keyboards, accordion, and vocals; Mike Katz on Highland bagpipes, small pipes, and whistles; Alasdair White on fiddle, whistle, Bouzouki, and Highland and small pipes; and Sean O’Donnell with vocals and guitar. Joining the Battlefield Band is a long-time local favorite, The Keith Highlanders Pipe Band. The Keith Highlanders will add to the performance their own exuberant energy and color, as they prepare for a return trip to the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow next summer.

In conjunction with the evening’s performance, Kirkland Performance Center is pleased to present a Master Class with the Battlefield Band (also on Oct. 29 at 4 p.m.) This workshop will be held on the KPC Stage. The band will discuss the Scottish Tradition, the place of their music within that tradition, and their instruments.
