The Kirkland Business Chamber announced Associated Earth Sciences, Inc. (AES) as the winner of its Chuck Morgan Business Excellence Award last week.

The award is given every year to a Kirkland business that exemplifies business citizenship, proven leadership and quality of life.

“We’re very pleased to receive this special recognition,” said Bruce Blyton, AES principal.

The environmental sciences firm was founded in 1981 by the late Lou Lepp, in a garage in the Bridle Trails neighborhood of Kirkland. It later moved into the complex where it is today behind the post office and currently employs nearly 70 people.

Clients include many Kirkland businesses, such as Cam West, Touchstone, City of Kirkland, Evergreen Hospital and Lake Washington Technical College.

AES has supported the Kirkland Chamber through its board participation, and has supported the Chamber for many events, including the Concours, auction and golf tournaments. In addition, AES has walked the talk in sustainability efforts by leading Sustainable September for the past two years, participating in city green ivy pulls and plantings, and has helped start the city’s Green Business program.

The Chamber also recognized three individuals for distinction. Susan Stearns of Totally Sound Fitness received the A. Duane Lund Chamber Member of the Year award. Stearns has owned her personal fitness training business for 15 years and has belonged to the Chamber of Commerce for almost 14 years.

Marc Nowak received the Anne J. Owen Community Service award for giving back to the Kirkland community.

He was recently honored as the Kirkland Concours d’ Elegance volunteer of the year. He is also on the steering committee of “Vision 20/20” that is developing the strategic plan for the city’s arts and culture.

The Chamber also recognized Juanita High senior Lars Myren with the Lee Johnson Student Community Service award. Myren has earned a 3.9 grade point average, while also being involved in many clubs and activities, including Marketing, DECA, Spanish Club, Multicultural Club, Jazz and Concert Choir.

His future plans are to attend the University of Washington and major in Business and Marketing.

A member of the Drama Board, Myren has participated in five drama productions and was both a technical and lighting director. He also organized the school’s talent show and toy drive, events that both raised money for charities.

After college, he would like to create advertising for a large corporation. He is the son of Nels and Tina Myren.
