Design shop helps Thailand orphanage

Kirkland’s Simplicity Decor set aside 10 percent of every purchase last holiday season, but that money wasn’t for the government. Instead, the downtown interior design shop used that money to buy food, clothing and other goods for an orphanage in Thailand.

Raising approximately $5,000 for the Bahn Tung Mahamek Boys Home through the promotion, Simplicity owner Suraphong Liengboonlertchai (who prefers to be called “A”) traveled to the orphanage earlier this year and consulted with administrators and teachers to identify their most pressing immediate and longer-term needs.

In addition to food and clothing, the money was spent on kitchen and laundry items, a new public address system, dining tables and chairs, storage cabinets and ceiling and floor fans.

The orphanage is in Liengboonlertchai’s home town.
