In a lavish display of hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness, California energy billionaire Tom Steyer and Adobe software founder Paul Brainerd, with several environmental special-interest groups, printed and mailed the biggest and fanciest political mailer I’ve ever seen. It is a four-page 11×17 glossy foldout nearly-last-minute hit piece with no notices of “printed on recycled paper with soy-based ink,” repeatedly calling Sen. Andy Hill the “King of Special Interests.” Steyer is well aware, and proud, that he himself is by far the biggest special interest ever to butt into a Washington State legislative race – he was last year, and is more than doubling his own record this year with well over $1.3 million.

Steyer’s intended beneficiary, Matt Isenhower, turns every candidate forum question into a rant against special interests and big political money ruining democratic governance and preventing the closing of tax loopholes. But he lacks the backbone and independence to tell Steyer “back off, support me by heeding my message about special interests, and my message is by itself strong enough to win the election.” No other Democrat has even raised a finger against Steyer either. Why hasn’t Larry Springer told Steyer to shush?

If Steyer is the real king of special interests, Isenhower and the Democrats are the pawns of special interests.

Here is $500 per hour advice, free for you Matt: Show leadership, make Steyer stop. If you let another last-minute hit piece happen, you’ll just prove you’re a pawn.
