Kirkland’s contractor began restriping more than 40 miles of roads and bike lanes this week throughout the city.

Specialized Pavement Marking is working at night, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday to finish the job by Aug. 28. The project includes removing and replacing the existing thermoplastic markings at 150 intersections and hundreds of crosswalks. Removal of the thermoplastic markings requires the contractor to grind them down with a machine, which does cause some noise, equivalent to a gas-powered hedge-trimmer.

Kirkland restripes all of its marked roads every year. Historically, the city’s contractor has performed the work throughout the work day. This year, however, the city is allowing night-work as a strategy to expedite the project, protect residents’ automobiles from overspray, and the city’s roads from tracked paint.
