Recycling Collection Event scheduled for Saturday at LWHS

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (May 13), Kirkland residents will have the opportunity to dispose of recyclable items that are not normally accepted during weekly collection. Drop off is in the parking lot at Lake Washington High School, 12033 NE 80th Street in Kirkland.

Residents can recycle household items such as fluorescent tubes, styrofoam and car seats, as well as bulky items such as oversized clean wood, mattresses and refrigerators. Free shredding is available, up to four file-size boxes per household. Processing fees apply to certain items, and only cash is accepted.

Accepted items include:

  • Air conditioners and dehumidifiers, processing fee of $33 for each item;
  • Batteries (including rechargeable);
  • Bulky wood (untreated, not painted or stained, no particle board, limit two loads per household);
  • Car seats, $5 each;
  • Electronic equipment and computer peripherals (no TVs, computer monitors or laptops);
  • Fluorescent tubes and bulbs (unbroken, limit 10 each per household);
  • Motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze and other auto fluids;
  • Mattresses and box springs (must be dry), $15 each;
  • Porcelain toilets and sinks, $15 each;
  • Propane tanks (empty, residential only), $5 each;
  • Small camping propane tanks (empty), $1 each;
  • Refrigerators and freezers, $28 each;
  • Styrofoam blocks and packing peanuts; and
  • Passenger tires, $0-3.50 each, and truck tires, $5-15 each (charge varies for size and on/off rim).

Staff asks residents to strictly adhere to the event’s hours, as there will be no entry after 3 p.m. sharp.

The Recycling Collection Event happens twice a year in Kirkland, and funding is provided by the King County Solid Waste Division and Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County.

Scrap metal will not be accepted at this event, but it will be accepted at the fall event. Hazardous material isn’t accepted either, and it should be disposed at the Traveling Wastemobile, which will be at Northwest University in Kirkland May 19-21, or Factoria Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off site.
