Kirkland Reporter wins three excellence in journalism awards at SPJ event

The Kirkland Reporter earned three awards at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Northwest Excellence in Journalism gala Saturday in Seattle.

The contest is held annually by Region 10 of SPJ to honor exceptional journalism in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.

Assistant Editor Matt Phelps took second place for editorial and commentary and was honored for his work “A thorough look into the meaning of misspellings for a local newspaper.”

Along with Editor Carrie Rodriguez, Phelps also received a third-place award in government and politics reporting for their story “Eastside pastor vows to fight same-sex marriage legislation.”

Reporter Raechel Dawson took third place for environmental and science reporting for her work“Residents, City of Kirkland seek solution to bouncy ball litter.”

More than 2,100 entries from more than 250 media organizations were submitted and then rated by out-of-state judges. The Reporter competes with non-daily newspapers.
