Support for Tea Adams is key to Juanita girls’ success

There aren’t many breakout performances left for Téa Adams. The breakout, this season, might be more of a break-up.

Already seen as a possible all-state contender and among the top college prospect in the region, Adams is a threat to score every time she touches the ball. She can cross over, she can get to the rim, she can shoot the mid-range and she is deadly from behind the line.

But the Juanita High School girls basketball team can’t succeed as a one-trick pony, unless Adams takes her game to a truly special level.

The reason: the Rebels’ No. 2 option and USC-commit Shalexxus Aaron is playing her senior season in Southern California this year.

While Adams led the Rebels last winter, averaging more than 20 points per game and earning an all-conference first-team nod, Aaron was more than a suitable backup. The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 18 points per game — nearly 10 points more than the player behind her.

The challenge this winter will be finding support for Adams, who formally committed to San Diego State in November.

The natural solution is senior guard Brittany White, an all-conference honorable mention last season. White has averaged just under 10 points per game through the first few weeks, a sizible increase.

Juniors Taylor Byrne and Hannah Kleppe both return, along with sophomore post Alexis Intong, but the Rebels have struggled to hit shots early on.

First-year coach Todd Brink, a 1981 graduate of Juanita High School, is hoping to push the ball and score in transition.

“We play good defense, but we’ve got to get better,” he said. “If we play really good defense, we’ll have success. Off of that, we’ll be able to run the ball and play fast like we want to play.”

Adams and White split scoring duties in the opening game against Ingrahm, a 57-11 win where Adams did damage inside and White did damage outside. Adams led with 19 points in a 60-52 conference loss to Redmond and score a career-high 36 in a 59-55 nonconference loss to Edmonds-Woodway on Dec. 5.

Should the Rebels put players in position to support Adams, Juanita appears poised for success. Bellevue lost five all-conference players, including the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, and Mercer Island lost two all-conference players.

“[Our goal is to] challenge for the league title and position ourselves well for the district playoffs,” Brink said. “That’s our first order of business, is league. We play in one of the tougher leagues in the state, so it will be tough competition every night.”

Juanita is scheduled to continue conference play against Mercer Island (2-0) tonight at 6 p.m. in the Juanita Fieldhouse.
