Mercer Island tops LW in league baseball final

Mercer Island scored all its runs in the late innings in a 6-0 victory over Lake Washington for the 3A KingCo baseball title on Saturday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.

The score was knotted at 0-0 after four innings before MI tallied for two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

For LW, Michael Buchanan had two hits and Joey Wishart had one hit.

LW will take on Bellevue at 4 p.m. Tuesday in a loser-out game at Bannerwood.

“The team has played very well this season. Whenever you replace nine starters, you are bound to have some growing pains, and we certainly have,” said LW coach Derek Bingham. “However, I feel like we have come together as a team and played well the second half of the year into the playoffs.”

Bingham said the team’s highlights have been a 5-2 record the second time through league, winning a 20-inning marathon game against Liberty and a “resounding” 5-0 win over Bellevue in the first round of the playoffs.

* Bellevue beat Juanita, 3-2, in an eight-inning affair on Saturday in the playoffs.

The score was deadlocked at 2-2 after five innings, and Bellevue scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.

Jayson Schroeder had two hits, including a triple, and one RBI for Juanita, whose season is over.
