Lake Washington baseball hands Mercer Island its first loss of the season

Mercer Island’s undefeated season is no more.

Powered by Jesus Vizcarra’s two-run homer and Michael Buchanan’s pitching, Lake Washington defeated the Islanders, 2-1, in 3A KingCo baseball action on Thursday night at Lee Johnson Field in Kirkland.

Vizcarra’s blast gave the Kangs a 2-0 lead in the second inning, and MI finally tallied in the sixth inning.

Buchanan went the distance, giving up five hits and one walk and striking out three in 103 pitches.

LW also got singles from Ricky Koishida, Travis Lee, Torin Montgomery and Nick Anderson.

The Kangs handed MI its first loss of the season as the Islanders are now 6-1 in league and 12-1 overall and stand in first place in 3A KingCo.

LW and Bellevue occupy the second-place spot with 5-2 records. The Kangs are 8-4 overall.

For MI on Thursday, Alex Shanks had an RBI single, Teague Conder had two hits and Greg Fuchs nailed a triple.

On the mound for the Islanders, Robert Weaver surrendered five hits, fanned four and walked none in 65 pitches over six innings.
