Change, it’s inevitable and I’ve never lived anywhere that has had so much razing and rising “up” for future benefit and profit in such a short period of time. Everyone is impacted, inconvenienced and even saddened by many of the changes happening on the Eastside. Maybe you’ve lost your favorite movie theater, albeit it was small, your favorite fish market, bakery, workout spot, view, restaurant, book store… it’s not just Redmond, it’s Kirkland and of course, Bellevue.
In the midst of the angry world of politics, which seems uglier by the day, we should all be grateful that Washington’s elections are trustworthy, accurate, and run by Secretary of State Kim Wyman. She is a leader who has kept Washington’s edge in voter registration, turnout, and ballot security.

With election day right around the corner, everyone one of us needs to think about what is at stake this year. Working people know that the path to prosperity starts with electing candidates who support a raising wage agenda. We have the opportunity to win equal pay, paid leave, fair scheduling and higher wages. These are just some of the reasons why Donald Trump is not the best choice for America.
Citizens want to be heard. They have concerns and they have needs in their community. Electing a representative that will hear and act on those needs and concerns is of great importance. It’s how you make sure that the need is addressed, and in a responsive and timely manner.
The Kirkland Promise Committee, the education committee of the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce thanks the Kirkland Kiwanis and Kirkland Rotary Club’s generous donations of $2,000 each to purchase the book “Zero to Five” by Tracy Cutchlow. This book teaches parents and others how children learned based on the academic studies and shares techniques for helping children grow and develop themselves.

Having lived on the Eastside for nearly 50 years, I have seen many positive changes in our neighborhoods, much of it due to the work of our forward-thinking representatives in the state legislature. In particular, the 45th Legislative District has been competently served by Roger Goodman over the course of his five terms in office.

We have given the national media power to control our choices for president. Yet The Detroit News, who endorsed Republicans for the past 143 years; the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the hometown newspaper of Democratic Vice-presidential candidate Tim Kaine; and the Chicago Tribune, President Obama’s hometown paper, all endorse Libertarians Gary Johnson/Bill Weld. But the national print, talk, TV media tell us we have only Trump and Hillary as choices.
Viva Volunteers! is a volunteer fair presented by Kirkland Senior Council from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 15 at Peter Kirk Community Center. We invite people of all ages to join us to learn about volunteer opportunities in Kirkland and throughout the region. It is a great way to give back to your community, find a family bonding project, meet new friends or discover opportunities to complete service projects.
Thank you to the City of Kirkland for digging out our ditches on Finn Hill.
Kirkland thrives on working together as volunteers to make our community a better place to live. We put together major events, we clean and improve our parks, we help out in our schools, we rescue animals, and we work with organizations that give a hand to people who need help.

People often talk about giving back to their community but sometimes find its hard to know just how to do that. Viva Volunteers! Fair is a chance to find how you can give back by volunteering your time to worthy organizations.
I am writing to offer a unique perspective on my former opponent, Shelley Kloba. Opposing candidates don’t often speak highly of one another, however I was immediately struck by her insight into issues, dedication to working with others, and openness with me leading up to the primary.
Our family backs Ramiro Valderrama 100 percent for state representative and we urge all voters in Redmond, Sammamish, Kirkland, Woodinville, and Duvall to bring a positive change to our community by giving him your vote. Mr. Valderrama is the best choice whether you consider yourself a Republican, Democrat, or Independent. He was given the rare, highest rating of “Outstanding” by the Municipal League, which is a non-partisan organization that seeks to replace corrupt, graft-ridden city governments with honest and capable administrations.
The days are getting shorter and the evenings cooler. Kids and parents are settling into their “back to school” routines, but unfortunately not all kids have what they need for a good start to a productive school year.
Living next to Marina Park (and the marina) I have to wonder why the city approves a three-day drinking festival in its public park, let alone with inadequate policing. While the 12 hour Saturday all-day party ended at 11 p.m. in theory, it was still going on long and strong at the dock until 2:30 a.m. on Sunday with crew from vessels Candela, Skipping Town and Saltyhouse continuing the October Festivities to some rocking tunes. Unfortunately, the 42 units of families living there had to enjoy it whether they did or not. No worries for those that could remain and nap on Sunday. Oh wait, the park itself continued to rock until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Good times!
