PSE submits permit for transmission lines in Kirkland

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) plans on submitting permit applications with the cities of Kirkland and Redmond this summer to begin constructing a new electricity transmission line running from the Sammamish substation to the Juanita substation.

The project would create some 4.5 miles of 115 kilovolt transmission line which, according to PSE project documents presented to the city of Kirkland, would improve service to some 150,000 customers.

Creating a new line would increase the amount of power the company could deliver, as well as create more system reliability during outages and peak hours, the company said.

The route of the line will fall largely within existing easements along Willows Road, industrial areas and the railroad corridor north of Northeast 124th Street.

PSE began discussions about the new lines with the city and residents of the Kingsgate, Juanita and North Rose Hill neighborhoods in 2012 to come to an agreement over the route.

Portions of the line would run through wetlands and stream areas which would require environmental applications to be approved by the Washington State Department of Ecology and a hearings examiner, which 115 kilovolt lines generally do not require.

If approved by the state and city, construction could begin in 2017 during work week hours and occasionally on Saturdays.
