New doctor joins EvergreenHealth infectious disease practice

Dr. Diego Lopez de Castilla has joined the Kirkland-based EvergreenHealth system’s Infectious Disease and Travel Medicine practice. Lopez de Castilla is an expert in the prevention and treatment of infection and he specializes in hepatitis C treatment, HIV medicine and co-infections, tropical medicine and infection.

“We are glad to welcome Dr. Lopez de Castilla to the EvergreenHealth system and look forward to the expert care he’ll provide to an important population of patients in our community,” EvergreenHealth CEO Bob Malte said. “His patient-centered approach, and experience in treating hepatitis C in particular, will bring more treatment options to a significant segment of our community.”

Recent national efforts have encouraged people born between 1945 and 1965 to get tested for hepatitis C, as people born during this time are five times more likely than other adults to be infected with the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Many people who have hepatitis C may not know they are infected, which can lead to cirrhosis of the liver and other potentially fatal health concerns if left untreated. Treatment options are available if the disease is identified, and I am passionate about encouraging people to get tested,” Lopez de Castilla, who has successfully treated more than 100 individuals living with chronic hepatitis C, said. He attributes their positive outcomes, in part, to providing individualized care to each patient and developing treatment plans that best fit the patient’s specific needs.

In his previous role, Lopez de Castilla served as a physician of internal medicine and infectious disease at the University of Washington. He is board certified in Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine and received his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.
