Former JHS security guard pleads guilty to insurance fraud

A former Juanita High School security guard and coach pleaded guilty to first-degree theft stemming from a string of fraudulent insurance claims involving Juanita High parents, students and teachers.

Brad Burmester, 51, of Vancouver, filed 15 false claims for windshield or window repairs through his business Alligator Auto Glass, which he operated out of his Kirkland home. The first claim was on Aug. 1, 2015 and the last on Feb. 5, 2016.

An investigation by Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler’s Criminal Investigations Unit found Burmester had access to insurance and vehicle information required for students to obtain a parking pass. Burmester filed claims totalling $6,569 with PEMCO Insurance.

On Jan. 24, Burmester was sentenced to 100 hours of community service, and will play $600 in court fees and $6,569 in restitution to PEMCO. Burmester resigned from Juanita High in April, 2016.

Kara Klotz, a spokesperson for the Insurance Commissioner’s office, said PEMCO alerted the commissioner to the fraudulent claims. No money was taken directly from the victims, but unreported insurance fraud can lead to higher premiums.

Klotz said customers should be concerned if their insurance contacts them regarding a claim they didn’t submit. Possible fraudulent claims can be reported on the Insurance Commissioner’s website at www.insurance.wa.gov.
