Election season officially begins for local races

May 20 was the final day to file for public offices up for election on November's ballot. Races with more than two candidates will have a primary in August, where the top two candidates will advance to the general election.

On first mention, next to their party affiliation will be their total campaign finances raised according to the state Public Disclosure Commission as of May 23. Some candidate’s earnings are not available either due to not having filed yet or opting to fund their campaigns through small donations.

Long-time First District (Bothell and North Kirkland) state Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe (D) will not be seeking reelection, opening up the race to three challengers.

Guy Palumbo (D, $51,250.69), current House Rep. Luis Moscoso (D, $7,227 for Senate and $22,958.25 for House race) and Mindie Wirth (R, $15,250) to campaign for the position.

“I’m excited to bring my private sector experience to the table to provide North King and South Snohomish with some much needed relief,” said Palumbo in a release.

Vying for Moscoso’s First District House seat, Pos. 2, are Kyoko Matsumoto Wright (D, unavailable), Aaron Moreau-Cook (D, unavailable), Edward J. Barton (R, $3,125.88 for Senate, $2,870.12 for House race), Darshan Rauniyar (D, $1,125), Kirkland City Council member Shelley Kloba (D, $7,564.60) and Jim Langston (R, unavailable).

Derek Stanford (D, $41,080), the First District Pos. 1 House incumbent will be competing for his seat against Brian M. Travis (R, $0), Neil Thannisch (R, $1,000) and Kazuaki Sugiyama (D, unavailable).

In the 45th District (East Kirkland and Redmond), Roger Goodman (D, $34,217.58) will be battling Sammamish Deputy Mayor Ramiro Valderrama (GOP, $14,855.29) for the Pos. 1 House seat.

“I’m very pleased with what we’ve accomplished these past two years,” Goodman said. “I’ve always made community safety a top priority but I’m also proud that we were able to make bipartisan investments in our schools, freeze college tuition for local families, and make crucial investments in our mental health system.”

Larry Springer is running unopposed for the second 45th District House seat.

In the 48th District (South Kirkland and Bellevue), incumbent Patty Kuderer (D, $39,180.29) will face off against Michelle Darnell (Libertarian, $1,884.80) for the first House seat and Joan McBride (D, $57,324.60) will defend her seat against Benjamin Judah Phelps (L, unavailable).

“It has been a true honor represent the 48th Legislative District in Olympia,” McBride said in a release. “I am proud of the improvements I helped lead on transportation, housing and affordability, and measures to save money and improve efficiencies in our local governments.”

Also notable is 48th District State Senator Cyrus Habib (D) running against 10 other candidates for Lieutenant Governor.
