The annual Redmond/Kirkland Relay for Life event, held in June at Redmond High School, will host its kick-off party at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Canyons Restaurant in Redmond.

Canyons, located at 15740 Redmond Way, will be offering happy hour pricing to anyone who presents a Relay for Life coupon flyer, which will be available at the door, the night of the event. The kick-off will provide information about the local Relay for Life event and how to participate. Chair persons will be on hand to answer any questions potential participants may have.

The Relay for Life event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, which uses the funds for research and cancer patient support. In addition, the funding supports programs for patients while they are receiving treatments.

The Redmond/Kirkland Relay for Life is in its 11th year and raised more than $75,000 last year. The goal for this year’s event is to raise $84,000.

This year, the event will begin Saturday, June 9 at noon with the Survivor Breakfast, Opening Ceremonies and the Survivor Lap. There is entertainment and other events which take place over the 20-hour period during the event as participants walk around the track at the high school.

The Luminary Lap takes place at 10 p.m. on Saturday, with a bagpipe player. The track is lined with more than 400 luminaries, all of which display the name of a cancer survivor, or a person who lost their battle with cancer. The event concludes at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 10 with Closing Ceremonies and the announcement of how much the event raised.

For those people interested in joining the Redmond/Kirkland Relay for Life as a participant or would like to host a team, volunteer at one of the event stations or booths or donate money or items can contact the event’s American Cancer Society representative, Sarah Yelenich at sarah.yelenich@cancer.org.
