Panther WellFest educates KiMS students on how to make healthy choices

Kirkland Middle School recently held its first-ever Panther WellFest to educate students on how to manage stress, make nutrient-rich food choices and have fun with exercise.

The school teamed up with parents and local businesses in the community, including Bassline Fitness, Columbia Athletic Club and Barre3. In addition, the event featured snacks from Healthy Bonez, Trader Joe’s, Outshine Popsicles, LizzyKate iced tea and QFC. There was also a DJ at the event.

Panther WellFest also held a raffle with a prizes that included a one-month membership at Columbia Athletic Club, paddleboard rental for two, cooking class at Frog Legs for two, Mandala coloring book and more.

“The event was a great success,” said WellFest committee member Janis Rabuchin, adding that the event brought in more than 250 students. “The DJ was fun and the (Lake Washington High School) drill team kept the energy high while the kids had a chance to explore different stations that centered around nutrition, exercise and mindfulness.”

Rabuchin said some of the favorite activities included the “You are Sweet Enough” station where kids matched drinks with their sugar content, the Bassline fitness circuit challenge and the “relaxation station,” where they learned some techniques to lower their anxiety levels. There was also a station that featured a game about recycling.

“We are looking forward to doing this again next year so our students can continue to gain more confidence and knowledge about wellness topics that interest them,” Rabuchin said.
