Comcast Cares Day comes to Friends of Youth in Kirkland

Employees from the company’s Redmond office volunteered their time at the Eastside nonprofit.

On May 4, more than 75 local Comcast NBCUniversal employees and their families, friends and community partners volunteered to improve Friends of Youth’s (FOY) Kirkland campus as part of the 18th annual Comcast Cares Day.

This year, Comcast volunteers from the company’s Redmond office supported FOY by organizing its donation area and helping sort the organization’s stockpile of existing donations. The team also landscaped the campus — weeding and replanting the campus’ flower beds.

“Since 2012, Comcast has partnered with Friends of Youth in a multitude of ways, through monthly in-kind contributions of Internet services to our 27 program sites, sponsoring our annual luncheon, donating $25,000 for a traveling computer lab and of course their incredible volunteer support,” FOY volunteer program manager Toni Dondero said in a press release. “Every year at Comcast Cares Day, team members generously give up their Saturday to pull weeds, garden and clean our facilities at our Kirkland campus. This kindness and compassion help maintain the beautiful landscape and homes our youth call home, but more than that, it shows them that organizations like Comcast cares about their well-being and success.”

Since 1951, the release states that FOY has been a destination for local youth and young adults who need assistance with emergency shelter, transitional housing, supportive programs and developmental resources, such as case management services that help residents set goals, work on their education, obtain employment and much more.

According to the release, Comcast Cares Day volunteering has ranged from teaching digital literacy skills, to mentoring youth, to stocking food banks, to beautifying parks. To date, more than one million Comcast Cares Day volunteers have contributed more than six million service hours to improve local communities at more than 10,000 projects, the release states.
