Johnny Dennis, 9, tries to make contact with other HAM Radio operators during the Kirkland Amateur Radio Emergency Service HAM Radio Field Day at Juanita Park June 27. Also pictured is his father, Brad, and Eric Teoh. The Kirkland Amateur Radio Emergency Service Network is a City sponsored organization that uses HAM radios to supplement the City’s emergency/disaster communications. During this worldwide day of practice, HAM operators tried to reach other operators at locations as distant as possible. Most of the HAM radio operators at the event were part of the Lake Washington HAM Club, which offers instructional classes to children and their parents to prepare them to participate in emergency service communications groups. The next HAM Radio class begins Oct. 17. For information, visit http://lakewashingtonhamclub.org/default.aspx or e-mail k71wh@lakewashingtonhamclub.org.
