Sen. Rodney Tom of the 48th District went to every door at the Peter Kirk Community Center and delivered meals to homebound seniors recently, as part of the Legislators Deliver Meals on Wheels Campaign.

Carrying in several cases of food, Tom stopped to chat with several residents working on puzzles or reading books.

The campaign aims to bring awareness that there are many seniors in the state who are hungry because of lack of funding to provide meals. It also provided local legislators a first-hand experience in getting to know the challenges that many of our elders are facing.

Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels program provides over 440,000 meals every year to homebound seniors throughout King County.

Joann Stark, Meals on Wheels coordinator at Peter Kirk Community Center, said she was impressed by Tom’s questions about the quality of food given to clients at the center.

“The fact that he showed up to see how Meals on Wheels works and took time out of his busy schedule to see things for himself was wonderful,” Stark added.
