Women in technology

Kirkland resident Maria Langworthy, partner with Compass Partners, LLC, will present her yearlong research study on technical women to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) at 7 p.m., Oct. 15 at the Redmond at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, at the corner of 162nd Northeast and Northeast 116th Street.

The meeting is open to AAUW members and to others who want to learn more about mid and upper level technology career trajectories in the Northwest.

Langworthy spent the last year at Microsoft on a project investigating issues relating to women in technology, especially how Microsoft can retain and grow more senior technical women.

Maria has a Ph.D. in political sociology and a M.A. in International Relations, both from Boston University. She recently joined Compass Partners, a consulting firm that provides brand strategy to Fortune 100 companies and start-ups. Formerly, she was a strategy and research manager at Microsoft in Corporate Marketing and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer.

Since 1881, the AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research. The AAUW Educational Foundation this past year awarded almost $5 million in grants to women at graduate levels for fellowships and other awards.

The local AAUW Kirkland-Redmond raises funds for fellowships, local scholars, the Legal Advocacy Fund and joins with Bellevue Community College along with other AAUW Branches for community projects like Expanding Your Horizons, which provides opportunities for middle and high school girls to explore career paths in mathematics, sciences, and medicine.

Women engaged in business and technology from the region and especially the Kirkland-Redmond communities are welcomed to learn more about Langworthy’s career path research.
