The Kirkland Parks Department kicked off its popular “Kirkland Steppers” free walk program for adults age 50-plus yesterday with the first event of the year.

Now in its fifth year, the program drew 170 walkers last summer.

“Steppers” participants range in ability from long-time walkers and exercise participants to “serious couch potatoes, having never exercised a day in their life,” according to the parks department.

The program is designed to foster safety and friendship among “Steppers,” who typically travel in groups of 45 or more. Walkers will receive bright lime green t-shirts, reflective green shoe laces and pedometers.

Scheduled walks depart from the Peter Kirk Community Center (PKCC) every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:10 a.m. from June 3 through Sept. 30. Registration is required and can be done online at www.MyParksandRecreation.com.

Special events and picnics associated with the program are listed in the “Kirkland Steppers Schedule and Special Events” flyer, available at the PKCC.
