Candlelight vigils for Sandy Hook victims to be held Friday, Sunday in Kirkland
December 21, 2012 · Updated 4:12 PM
Two candlelight vigils will be held in Kirkland to honor the victims who lost their lives in the recent Newtown, Conn. shootings.
The first event will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21 at the Kirkland Eagles F.O.E., 258 Central Way in Kirkland.
The public is invited to write their messages of support to families in Connecticut and those notes will be sent to the families in a care package for the holidays. The event will include a moment of silence at 7 p.m.
A second remembrance event will also be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23 at Marina Park at The Puddle Jumpers statue in downtown Kirkland. There will be balloons for each life lost in the shootings and Ghislaine Bernard-Hasan, of Kirkland, will sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Amazing Grace” at 4 p.m.
“My hope is that anyone present will join me in the singing of these two songs and even then sing songs of their own choosing,” said Bernard-Hasan.
She said the event is a “neutral gathering” meant to serve as a peaceful remembrance of the victims to show “our deeply felt love and support for the families who have lost so much as they approach this holiday season.”
