Katie Shankle, a ninth grader at Kamiakin junior high, was recently recognized at a Puget Sound Educational Service District Regional High School Art Show for an “outstanding achievement” in acrylic painting.

Her work, titled “Dancers Behind the Curtain,” was recognized for excellence among 93 entries by ninth through 12th graders from 15 school districts in King, Kitsap and Pierce counties. Painted in the spirit of French impressionist Edgar Degas, her work was judged on creativity, composition and technique.
